Uncertainty
Search for some kind of constant and permanent suspension of your temptation for certainty. ![]() Consistency is contrary to nature, contrary to life. The only completely consistent people are the dead. ![]() Inquiry is fatal to certainty. ![]() It is the business of the future to be dangerous. The major advances in civilization are processes that all but wreck the societies in which they occur. ![]() If we can recognize that change and uncertainty are basic principles, we can greet the future and the transformation we are undergoing with the understanding that we do not know enough to be pessimistic. ![]() The best way to predict the future is to invent it. ![]() The principal fact of life is the free mind. For good and evil, man is a free creative spirit. This produces the very queer world we live in, a world in continuous creation and therefore continuous change and insecurity. A perpetually new and lively world, but a dangerous one, full of tragedy and injustice. A world in everlasting conflict between the new idea and the old allegiances, new arts and new inventions against the old establishment. ![]() Stability is a state of perpetual disequilibrium ensured by constant error. ![]() In order to arrive at what you do not know, you must go by way of ignorance. In order to possess what you do not possess, you must go by way of dispossession. In order to arrive at what you are not, you must go through the way in which you are not. ![]() The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty; not knowing what comes next. ![]() The whole universe, it seems, is lawful and yet it has freedom of choice. The price for this freedom is an inability to know the final destination or to be in control of the journey. ![]() In this day and age, if you're not confused, you're not thinking clearly. ![]() The only real security in life lies in relishing life's insecurity. ![]() One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. ![]() Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit. ![]() Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds. ![]() Science is not about control. It is about cultivating a perpetual sense of wonder in the face of something that forever grows one step richer and subtler than our latest theory about it. It is about reverence, not mastery. ![]() Don't ever let it get the best of you — plan what you can — let the rest shine through. Just so many angles you can possibly see, got to figure on those — let the other ones be. ![]() The only certainty is that nothing is certain. ![]() It is chaos the provides the growing spaces, the open spaces in which life evolves. The significant gift of chaos is to create the "differences that make a difference", through which we learn. ![]() To be uncertain is to be uncomfortable. To be certain is to be ridiculous. ![]() Human experience is usually paradoxical, that means incongruous with the phrases of current talk or even current philosophy. ![]() I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment, making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity. |
