Learning
Learning in organization is nothing more, not less, than the evolution of human consciousness. And the role of the organization is to facilitate that process. ![]() It takes more time and effort and delicacy to learn the silence of a people than to learn it's sounds. The learning of the grammar of silence is an art much more difficult to learn than the grammar of sounds. ![]() I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. ![]() Learning is what most adults will do for a living in the 21st century. ![]() To be told is not to see. ![]() To know the meaning of words, first know the speaker. ![]() Real learning comes about when the competitive spirit has ceased. ![]() You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to run by running, to work by working; and just so, you learn to love by loving. All those who think to learn in any other way deceive themselves. ![]() Whenever we are gathered together, even if there are only two, and we are speaking with an open heart and a good mind in order to create an understanding, we sit in a circle. Because there are always the Unseen that have gathered there with us. Once you get up from this circle, you will never be the same individual that you were when you sat down. We have sat and shared the vibrations and the energy that have traveled the circle in us and through us. Our hearts and minds have been opened; that's the law that our people knew and practiced. That was their way of teaching. ![]() There are three ingredients in the good life: learning, earning, and yearning. ![]() Too often we give our children answers to remember rather than problems to solve. ![]() The essence of our effort to see that every child has a chance must be to assure each an equal opportunity, not to become equal, but to become different-to realize whatever unique potential of body, mind and spirit he or she possesses. ![]() Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness. ![]() The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled. ![]() Anyone who has begun to think places some portion of the world in jeopardy. ![]() The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ![]() Thinking is more interesting than knowing, but less interesting than looking. ![]() Science is not about control. It is about cultivating a perpetual sense of wonder in the face of something that forever grows one step richer and subtler than our latest theory about it. It is about reverence, not mastery. ![]() What we all need at this point in human evolution is to learn what it takes to learn what we should learn — and learn it. ![]() Only the hand that erases can write the true thing. ![]() You're only as young as the last time you changed your mind. ![]() If you want to truly understand something, try to change it. ![]() The more you talk about It, and the more you think about It, the further from It you go. Stop talking, stop thinking, and there is nothing you will not understand. ![]() Ultimately, your greatest teacher is to live with an open heart. ![]() Not just any talk is conversation; not any talk raises consciousness. Good conversation has an edge: it opens your eyes to something, quickens your ears. And good conversation reverberates: it keeps on talking in your mind later in the day; the next day, you find yourself still conversing with what was said. That reverberation afterward is the very raising of consciousness; your mind's been moved. You are at another level with your reflections. ![]() We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it — and stop there; lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove-lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove-lid again — and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore. ![]() No man can reveal to you aught but that which lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. ![]() Experience is a matter of sensibility and intuition, of seeing and hearing the significant things, of paying attention at the right moments, of understanding and coordinating. Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him. ![]() How many things served us but yesterday as articles of faith, which today we deem but fables? ![]() When reading the works of an important thinker, first look for the apparent absurdities in the text and ask yourself how a sensible person could have written them. When you find an answer — when those passages make sense — then you may find that more central passages, ones you previously thought you understood, have changed their meaning. ![]() The teacher, if he is indeed wise, does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. ![]() It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. ![]() It is chaos the provides the growing spaces, the open spaces in which life evolves. The significant gift of chaos is to create the "differences that make a difference", through which we learn. ![]() It's what you learn after you know it all that counts. ![]() Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. Seek what they sought. ![]() Learning is not something that requires time out from being engaged in productive activity. To put it simply, learning is the new form of labor. ![]() Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel. ![]() Believe nothing merely because you have been told it ... or because it is traditional, or because you yourselves have imagined it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings — that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide. ![]() Participation precedes learning. ![]() Listen I do not know if you have ever examined how you listen, it doesn't matter to what, whether to a bird, to the wind in the leaves, to the rushing waters, or how you listen in a dialogue with yourself, to your conversation in various relationships with your intimate friends, your wife or husband... If we try to listen we find it extraordinarily difficult, because we are always projecting our opinions and ideas, our prejudices, our background, our inclinations, our impulses; when they dominate we hardly listen to what is being said... In that state there is no value at all. One listens and therefore learns, only in a state of attention, a state of silence, in which this whole background is in abeyance, is quiet; then, it seems to me, it is possible to communicate. ![]() The virtue of good tools is that they don't ask you to become someone else. They invite you to create an extension of yourself that, with a little time and skill, lets you be more than what you are. Tools are a medium for self-expression. ![]() One must learn by doing things; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try. ![]() Learning is a process of preparing to deal with new situations. ![]() The sense of wonder, that is our sixth sense. ![]() The most useful piece of learning for the uses of life is to unlearn what is untrue. ![]() It is not necessary that you leave the house. Remain at your table and listen. Do not even listen, only wait. Do not even wait, be wholly still and alone. The world will present itself to you for its unmasking, it can do no other, in ecstasy it will writhe at your feet. ![]() It is in your self-interest not to have your perspective limited by your self-interest. ![]() In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. Learners usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists. ![]() If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don't bother trying to teach them. Instead, give them a tool, the use of which will lead to new ways of thinking. ![]() The dogmas of the past are inadequate for the stormy present and future. As our circumstances are new, we must think anew, and act anew. ![]() Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimension. ![]() The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn. ![]() The best teacher lodges an intent not in the mind but in heart. ![]() Sit down before fact as a little child, be prepared to give up every preconceived notion, follow humbly wherever or whatever abysses nature leads, or you will learn nothing. ![]() Doubt is the necessary tool of knowledge. ![]() A right attitude to understand is to have nothing to defend. ![]() School is the advertising agency which makes you believe that you need the society as it is. |
